What is Sassa?


SASSA is the South Africa Social Security Agency that distributes different types of social grants among the citizens of South Africa who are currently facing a hard time due to certain situations. Sassa’s only job is to administer social grants to those who are vulnerable to poverty and in need of support.


There is a misconception about the Sassa grant that Sassa only qualify the Sassa older age pension. There are multiple people who apply for a grant every day. The Social Assistance Act of 2004 and its regulations to the Act give the legal framework for the administration of all social grants. You can apply online for the Sassa SRD  application.

Sassa evaluates everyone through the means test. Everyone who applies for a Sassa grant must have to pass the Sassa mean test in order to get the grant from Sassa, where the Sassa evaluates your income and assets. If your assets and financial income are below the threshold that is fixed by the Sassa, then you will qualify for the grant.

Social Relief of Distress grant:

Beneficiaries of the Special Relief of Distress (SRD) grant were advised to reapply for the Sassa grant before the end of April 2022. The South African Social Security Agency said in the statement that:

Applications should be lodged before the end of April 2022 if applicants want their applications to be considered for April 2022. 

Before submitting your grant application, you have to meet the following criteria:

  1. The candidate should be a South African citizen with permanent residency, refugee or asylum seekers status, or holding special permits.
  2. Must be Unemployed or does not get any support from other institutes.
  3. Have no any other source from where the candidate gets help.
  4. Ages should be in between 18 and 60

The candidates who want to apply can send their application through Sassa selective means every month. 

How to apply for the SRD grant online

The candidate can apply online through the Sassa website:

  1. Go to Goggle
  2. Search the URL: srd.sassa.gov.za
  3. Scroll down the page until you find: ‘How do I apply for this SRD Grant’
  4. Click on the yellow bar that contains the text: ‘click here to apply online
  5. Enter your mobile number
  6. Click on “send SMS.” 
  7. Then enter the one-time pin from your phone number that Sassa has sent to you on the phone number.
  8. Continue the application process by following the required steps.

Additionally, the Sassa R350 grant beneficiaries who want to apply under the new regulations according to Social Assistance Act. As the r350 grant Sassa, the entire application system remains purely online and digital.

Sassa has also shared the information that there is no need for candidates to apply for the application each month. They only have to apply once, but the applicant will need to check the Sassa status usually to remain updated about their payment and other situations. 


Suppose the applicant wants their SRD Sassa grant application considered. The applicant must have to accept the consent for Sassa, and they also have to verify his or her identity through an ID document, residency card, income and assets proof, or social security benefits. Under the new Act, existing beneficiaries are urged to reapply. Once you’ve reapplied, you won’t have to apply again.
